frequent flier style

vintage seashell collection

something about the vintage textiles featured in the debut collection of jumpseat bags reminds me of flying the friendly skies around the islands as a kid. my déjà-vu moment was unshakable until a little digging turned up the little nugget that the company behind the bags is utilizing dead stock from a shuttered miami carrier.

oh well, even if someone else buckled up into airline seats covered in the retro tropical sunset pattern, i still love how seat belts have been repurposed into the handles for jumpseat's handcrafted line which certainly breaths new life into forgotten fabric.

alas, this fusion of new and vintage does not come cheap, but something for the wish list for anyone who wants to bring a hint of glamour from flying's bygone era on-board their next flight.

fresh goodness: heather brown

three wave set * ginger * surfer girl

north shore artist heather brown's newest hand screenprinted tees are just the thing to wear on a lovely summer day. the online shop is also stocked with new prints fresh from heather's latest art show. i, for one, am quite smitten with the latest depictions of heather's delightfully happy little hawaiian birds.

with the exception of party wave, the original paintings have already been snapped up by savvy buyers but the online offerings include a variety of matted prints (starting at $15 for an 8x10), giclées, and the occasional greeting card.

heather's artwork and tees can also be found at chinatown boardroom.

dan weaver fall 2008

word is that dan weaver, one of hawaii's most watched up & coming indie designers, is putting the finishing touches on his fall 08 collection which will make its official debut next friday.

dan graduated from the uh fashion program and, project runway fans take note, his design chops got him all the way to the third round of last season's audition process. and, while he may not have made it to the big show yet, he did score face time with the impeccable tim gunn.

here's the 411 on the collection:

"the fall o8 collection borrows buffalo plaid and classic americana construction concepts while creating original pieces/looks that place emphasis on classic natural waste [sic] line silhouettes. also timeless styles / concepts / applications are given new life, from the cuffs to the collars. as always extensive detail is paid to color and my love for small color changes in fabric juxtaposition."

see what all the fuss is about and hele over to dan's website to reserve your spot for the fashion show (reserved ticket holders will also score a swag bag filled with goodies and a dw tee).

boardshort roundup

sometimes it seems like the fellas are forgotten about here on h|h so take a moment and enjoy this mid-summer boardshort roundup!

1 - patagonia's palaka boardshorts were the jumping off point for this edition. the delightfully old school pattern is instantly recognizable to anyone who grew up in hawaii back in the day (available online or stop by the haleiwa shop).

2 - paddlers will definitely want to hit the waves in 'oiwi's ho'ohele boardshorts. alas, they have disappeared from the online shop so hit the kailua outpost to get yours.

3 - represent the 808 with j.crew's retro map bermudas (oops, forgot to mention that these may also be available at the ala moana shop).

4 - i spotted loomstate's organic holas boardshort while shopping greenloop's summer sale. the 100% organic cotton will take longer to dry but 'tis a small sacrifice for going green (p.s. a w's version is available here).
